Van Gogh sold one painting in his lifetime. The work here is the part that came after — the paintings people now hang in kitchens and bedrooms without thinking of them as art history at all. What We Carry

Choosing For The Room

The blues — Starry Night, the Rhône, Church at Auvers — sit well in a bedroom or a hallway and read as calm rather than busy. The wheat and olive landscapes carry gold and green and suit a kitchen or a dining room. Sunflowers and Almond Blossoms are the ones that lift a dim room, and they are the two most often bought as gifts.

Which Starry Night

Worth knowing before you order, because people order the wrong one. Starry Night is the swirling sky over the village, painted from an asylum window at Saint-Rémy — the one on the posters. Starry Night Over the Rhône is earlier, painted at Arles: a calm river, gaslight on the water, a couple walking the bank. Same name in conversation, different paintings entirely, and the Rhône is the one that suits a bedroom.

A Gift Note

Almond Blossoms is the one to reach for at a birth — Van Gogh painted it for his brother's newborn son, and knowing that changes how it reads on a nursery wall. Sunflowers is the safe gift for someone whose taste you do not know. Wheat Fields with Cypresses is the one to give somebody who already owns a Van Gogh.
