Cafe Terrace at Night Canvas Print, Van Gogh’s 1888 Arles Scene

Price range: $29.99 through $54.99

This cafe terrace at night canvas print reproduces Vincent van Gogh’s 1888 view of an open-air terrace on the Place du Forum in Arles, its yellow gas-lit awning glowing over cobblestones and cafe tables under a star-stippled blue sky.

Van Gogh worked outdoors after dark to paint this scene by gaslight, and it became the first canvas where he lit a night sky with color instead of black — the open terrace itself, not an indoor cafe room, is the whole subject.

Printed and gallery-wrapped by hand in our family-owned workshop in Northeast Ohio; the canvas hangs securely without nails or tools and removes cleanly without wall damage.

Choose the classic gallery-wrapped edge or upgrade to the floating frame for extra depth.

Description

This canvas reproduces Vincent van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace at Night, painted in September 1888 outside a real cafe on the Place du Forum in Arles, its yellow gas-lit awning spilling light over the outdoor tables and cobblestone street under a deep blue, star-stippled sky. It comes gallery-wrapped in 11×14 and 16×20, or upgraded to a floating frame at either size. As a cafe terrace at night canvas print it arrives finished and ready to hang, in whichever size and style you pick at checkout.

Van Gogh worked outdoors at night to paint this scene, setting up his equipment on the square itself rather than sketching from memory indoors. It was the first canvas in which he lit a night sky using color instead of black, and the open terrace, its awning, and the cobblestones are the entire subject — there is no interior, no tables set against a wall, just the cafe spilling out onto the square under the stars. The original has hung at the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Netherlands since the early twentieth century, and Van Gogh painted it in September 1888, not long after he settled in Arles.

Each canvas is made to order in our family-owned workshop in Northeast Ohio, stretched over gallery-wrapped bars and finished with fade-resistant inks that hold their color under direct light. The warm gold of the awning against the deep blue sky stays vivid at both the 11×14 and the larger 16×20, and both the gallery-wrapped and floating-frame styles suit a dining room, an entry, or any wall that wants a warm, glowing focal point.

The canvas hangs with an adhesive strip already in the box — it holds securely without nails or tools, and removes cleanly later without holes or wall damage, so it works as well in a rental or dorm as it does in a permanent home. Both sizes ship ready to hang, and the floating frame is worth the upgrade if the wall calls for a bit more depth.

Van Gogh fans and anyone building a gallery wall of his Arles-period work will recognize this terrace at a glance. Pick gallery-wrapped or floating frame, and it’s made to order and on its way.

Every order is made and packed by hand in our family shop in Northeast Ohio. We use premium gallery-wrapped canvas, high-quality frame material and fade-resistant inks for both prints and canvas. Each frame is made to order and shipped same or next business day.
