He set the walls in a deep red against a green ceiling and a yellow-toned floor, hung four gas lamps that throw soft orange haloes across the room, and left an empty green billiard table at the center while a handful of drinkers doze at the tables and the proprietor keeps watch in white. A clock on the wall marks the hour just past midnight, and Van Gogh signed the canvas ‘Vincent’ with the words ‘le cafe de nuit’ beneath. The original hangs today at the Yale University Art Gallery.
