Napoleon Crossing the Alps Canvas Print, David’s 1801 Portrait

Price range: $29.99 through $54.99

This napoleon crossing the alps canvas print reproduces Jacques-Louis David’s 1801 portrait of Bonaparte astride a rearing horse, cloak whipping in the wind as he points the way over the pass.

David carved three names into the rocks beneath the horse — Bonaparte, Hannibal, and Charlemagne — casting Napoleon as heir to two of history’s great mountain-crossing generals, and signed the canvas ‘L. David, L’An IX’ by the French Republican calendar.

Printed and gallery-wrapped by hand in our family-owned workshop in Northeast Ohio; the canvas hangs securely without nails or tools and removes cleanly without wall damage.

Choose the classic gallery-wrapped edge or upgrade to the floating frame for extra depth.

Description

This canvas reproduces Jacques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps, painted in 1801, with Bonaparte astride a rearing horse and his cloak caught mid-gust against a storm-grey sky. It comes gallery-wrapped in 11×14 and 16×20, or upgraded to a floating frame at either size. As a napoleon crossing the alps canvas print it arrives finished and ready to hang, in the size and style you choose at checkout.

David painted the scene in 1801, one of several versions he made showing Napoleon leading his army over the Great St. Bernard Pass into Italy two years earlier — though Napoleon himself crossed on a mule, not a warhorse, and posed for the head alone. The rocks at the horse’s feet carry three names cut into the stone: Bonaparte, Hannibal, and Charlemagne, placing Napoleon alongside two earlier generals who crossed the same mountains, and David signed the canvas ‘L. David, L’An IX,’ dating it to Year 9 of the French Republican calendar.

Each canvas is made to order in our family-owned workshop in Northeast Ohio, stretched over gallery-wrapped bars and finished with fade-resistant inks that hold their color under direct light. A painting this well known survives the trip to canvas cleanly — the red cloak, the grey sky, and the carved names all stay sharp at both the 11×14 and the larger 16×20. History classrooms, offices, and study walls are the settings most often paired with it, and both the gallery-wrapped and floating-frame styles keep the drama of the original intact.

The canvas hangs with an adhesive strip already in the box — it holds securely without nails or tools, and removes cleanly later without holes or wall damage, so it works as well in a rental or dorm as it does in a permanent home. Both sizes ship ready to hang, and the floating frame is worth the upgrade if you want more depth on the wall.

A history buff or a Napoleonic-era collector will recognize every detail of this scene at a glance. Pick gallery-wrapped or floating frame, and it’s made to order and on its way.

Every order is made and packed by hand in our family shop in Northeast Ohio. We use premium gallery-wrapped canvas, high-quality frame material and fade-resistant inks for both prints and canvas. Each frame is made to order and shipped same or next business day.
