The Bookworm Spitzweg Canvas Print – Der Bucherwurm Library Wall Art

Description

Der Bucherwurm, Carl Spitzweg’s 1850 portrait of a scholar perched on a rolling library ladder with a book in each hand and another under his arm, is printed here on gallery-wrapped canvas at 11×14 and 16×20, with a floating-frame upgrade available at both sizes. As the bookworm spitzweg canvas print for a study, office, or home library, it arrives finished and ready to place on the wall.

Spitzweg was a self-taught painter and a trained pharmacist, and this genre scene is the one people remember him for: a bibliophile so absorbed in his reading that he has stopped noticing the ladder under his feet. Set against towering shelves of leather-bound volumes, it is less a portrait of one man than a portrait of the habit itself, and it has stayed a favorite among readers, librarians, and teachers for exactly that reason. Anyone who has ever lost an afternoon standing at a bookshelf will recognize themselves in it.

Each canvas is made in the USA, printed and finished to order in our family-owned workshop in Northeast Ohio, edge to edge with fade-resistant inks and stretched over a solid wood frame for a clean, gallery finish. Choose the classic gallery-wrapped canvas for a simple, modern look, or upgrade to the floating frame for a finished, museum-style edge – both hold their color for years without fading in ordinary indoor light. It suits dark academia decor, a home library, or any wall built around a love of books and old stories.

The 11×14 fits neatly above a desk or reading chair, while the 16×20 statement piece is sized to anchor a larger wall in a den, office, or library nook. Wall hangers are included, so it holds securely without nails or tools and removes cleanly without holes or wall damage – a real advantage in a rental, apartment, or dorm. Either size layers naturally into a shelf of antique books and vintage decor.

Give it to the reader who always has a book nearby, or keep it for the wall behind your own favorite chair – either way, it is ready to hang the day it arrives.

Every order is made and packed by hand in our family shop in Northeast Ohio. We use premium gallery-wrapped canvas, high-quality frame material and fade-resistant inks for both prints and canvas. Each frame is made to order and shipped same or next business day.
