Bierstadt was the best-known painter of the American West in his lifetime. He moved to San Francisco in 1871 and spent two years sketching in the high country, and Sierra Nevada is one of the large studio canvases he built from those trips. Like much of his western work it is an idealized view rather than a map of one valley, gathering peaks, falls and forest into a single scene under soft, glowing light. He trained in Germany and worked in the spirit of the Hudson River School, and that sense of light breaking through mountain mist is what collectors still look for in his landscapes. The original is more than four and a half feet wide and belongs to Reynolda House Museum of American Art in North Carolina.
