Manet worked on A Bar at the Folies-Bergere through the winter of 1881, using one of the hall’s own barmaids as his model and reworking the composition in his studio because he was already too ill to paint standing at the hall itself. The trapeze artist’s green boots, visible only in the top left corner, are a nod to the theater’s real evening acts. Manet showed the finished canvas at the 1882 Paris Salon; it was his last major painting before he died the following year.
