Historical wall art does its best work in a room where people sit and talk — a den, a study, an office. The pieces here are paintings and photographs of moments people still want to remember: the aircraft and beaches of the Second World War, the men who led the country, and the ordinary Americans who worked its mills and factories. All of it is printed and framed to order in our family-owned shop in the USA.
What We Carry
The Second World War: P-51 Mustangs in formation, including Lou IV in D-Day stripes and three yellow-tail Mustangs in flight; the B-17 Flying Fortress; a ground crew at work; artillery; soldiers wading ashore in training; Pearl Harbor; and Into the Jaws of Death, the Omaha Beach landing. The home front is here too, in Alfred Palmer's aircraft factory and a woman welder.
Presidents and generals: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant at Cold Harbor, William Tecumseh Sherman, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt's Man in the Arena, and George Washington on farming.
Vintage photographs of American life: Lewis Hine's cotton mill spinner and power house mechanic, a factory worker, a Dust Bowl car, a pueblo village, children playing in the street, a pair of chess players, and a San Francisco cable car on Powell Street.
Choosing For The Person
For a veteran's family, or a grandchild marking a grandfather's service, the aircraft and the beach landings are the usual choice — pick the plane he flew or worked on, if you know it. For a reader of history, the portraits and the Civil War generals. For somebody who loves old photographs, the Lewis Hine pictures and the street scenes, which hold up to a long look.
Where They Go
A den, a study, an office, a library wall. The black-and-white photographs look best in a group of three; the aircraft prints hang well in a run down a hallway. Framed pieces have an easel back, so they also sit on a desk or a bookshelf.
Sizes, Frames And Canvas
Framed prints come in Barnwood, Charcoal, Black, and Walnut. Black and Charcoal suit the black-and-white photographs; Walnut and Barnwood warm up the paintings. Several portraits also come on 1-inch gallery-wrapped canvas that hangs without nails or tools, with a floating frame available as an upgrade.
Honouring A Person Rather Than An Event
If you are buying for someone who served rather than about a war, look at Military Wall Art as well. This collection is about the history itself; that one is about the people in it.
